Project summary

The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is part of a statewide initiative to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. CCAC matches Fellows with organizations to mobilize community members to take direct climate action through education, volunteer mobilization, and assessment focused on urban greening, organic waste diversion and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders.

Opportunity description

Join Jubilee Consortium as a Zero Waste Fellow and contribute to the organization's mission of alleviating food insecurity and promoting sustainable practices across Los Angeles. Zero Waste Fellows will play a pivotal role in increasing access to healthy foods and reducing organic waste in underserved communities. Through a multifaceted approach, Fellows will manage food recovery projects, lead nutrition education sessions, and oversee sustainable gardening and composting initiatives. Fellows will spearhead efforts to redistribute surplus food, manage volunteer teams at program gardens, and educate students on sustainable gardening practices at partner schools, while collaborating with sites to develop compost operations at zero organic waste facilities. Additionally, Fellows will receive training in basic nutrition to enhance their ability to support community members in adopting healthy lifestyles. Duties include, but are not limited to: Assist staff and partner sites in garden education, compost program implementation, produce distribution to promote healthy lifestyles and sustainable living Develop and deliver gardening, compost, nutrition, and healthy cooking workshops to students and the community. Coordinate volunteers for gardening, compost, food distribution, and seasonal events.  Manage zero organic waste program at Jubilee and partner sites, coordinating composting efforts to support our zero waste climate goals. Oversee the community nutrition project for shelf-stable goods, organizing food preservation initiatives to prolong the lifespan of nutritious foods and reduce food waste.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Live in California by August 16, 2024. Must be age 18 or older by August 16, 2024. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate.

Preferred qualifications

An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service. Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change. Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities. Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills.
