Project summary

A program of the American Climate Corps, the Working Lands Climate Corps will engage at least 100 young adults in technical skills training in climate-smart agriculture and forestry practices at host sites across the country.

Opportunity description

The WLCC member will assist with the day-to-day operations of the UCC Urban Community Farm and use available resources to plan and implement fruit and vegetable production at the UCC UCF. The member will help recruit and manage one-time and recurring volunteers for the 2024 growing season. The WLCC member will also work to improve the physical, operational, and support infrastructure and long term sustainability of the UCC UCF.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Be at least 17 years old at the start of service. Have a high school diploma or equivalent or agree to obtain a high school diploma prior to using the earned education award. Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria. Other qualifications may be required by the host site.

Preferred qualifications

Demonstrated interest in gardening, sustainability, and addressing food insecurity. Experience in the cultivation of plants, including integrated pest management, diagnosing plant conditions, and recommending treatment options. Knowledge of garden practices such as soil preparation, propagation, harvesting, food safety, pest management, irrigation, composting. Able to work outdoors, including during inclement weather. Ability to teach gardening skills and deliver educational sessions and presentations. Ability to work independently, take initiative, problem-solve, and prioritize. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google products. Able to lift up to 40 lbs.
