Project summary

These projects are natural resource preservation/conservation oriented and give people the opportunity to learn and master trail work techniques and construction in a variety of settings with a variety of tools with an eye toward restoring and maintaining trails in a sustainable way.

Opportunity description

Between 18-24 years old. Must be eligible for enrollment in AmeriCorps as a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident. Documentation will be required on the first day. High School diploma or currently working towards GED/ Equivalency required. English proficiency. Capable of participating in physical labor including but not limited to: ability to lift 50 lbs., able to conduct repetitive hand and arm motions. Significant walking. Access to a vehicle.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Coordinate/support AMC trail crews to ensure a safe working environment and quality trail work in the field. Coordinate and integrate partner youth corps crews into the work. Work with land managers, project sponsors, and partner crews to ensure standards are understood and implemented. Meet with project partners to plan project work, communicate with sponsors and partners about project as it is underway. Provide logistical/technical support to Field Staff. Teach trail work to crews.

Preferred qualifications

Must be a minimum of 18 years old by start date, no exceptions. Ability and desire to live and work outdoors for extended periods of time. Ability to work under varying weather conditions. Ability to carry heavy loads (50+ lbs.) for long distances over rugged terrain. Commitment to backcountry stewardship and Leave No Trace ethics. Commitment to professionalism. Good judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills. In order to drive, must have safe driving.
