Project summary

The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is part of a statewide initiative to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. CCAC matches Fellows with organizations to mobilize community members to take direct climate action through education, volunteer mobilization, and assessment focused on urban greening, organic waste diversion and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders.

Opportunity description

Tree Fresno offers an extraordinary professional opportunity to increase the urban tree canopy throughout the San Joaquin Valley. The Urban Greening Fellow role offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the environment and communities of South Central Fresno. In collaboration with the Urban Greening Coordinator, Fellows will spearhead the development of a pioneering program aimed at recruiting and training community volunteers as Community Foresters. Fellows will facilitate the annual distribution and planting of approximately 400 residential trees through the "Adopt A Tree" program and an additional 500 community-wide tree plantings at various community locations. Through collaborations with various stakeholders - including California Climate Investments, San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, Central California Environmental Justice Network, City of Fresno, and Caltrans - Fellows will participate in urban greening and the planting of vegetative barriers to enhance Fresno 's air quality. If you're passionate about urban tree planting and community empowerment, this role offers a dynamic platform to drive positive change and foster environmental stewardship in Fresno. Duties include, but are not limited to: Spearhead the development of the Community Foresters program, recruiting and training community volunteers as environmental stewards. Facilitate the annual distribution and planting of approximately 400 5-gallon trees to residents of South-Central Fresno through the "Adopt A Tree" program. Organize community-wide tree plantings at schools, parks, and streets, planting 500 15-gallon trees, fostering community engagement and environmental responsibility. Coordinate community outreach and recruitment efforts, engaging a diverse community to lead and support urban greening initiatives 'such as volunteer planting events, tree care, and water conservation efforts.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Live in California by August 16, 2024. Must be age 18 or older by August 16, 2024. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate.

Preferred qualifications

An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service. Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change. Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities. Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills.
