Project summary

The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is part of a statewide initiative to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. CCAC matches Fellows with organizations to mobilize community members to take direct climate action through education, volunteer mobilization, and assessment focused on urban greening, organic waste diversion and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders.

Opportunity description

Community Engagement Fellows at the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation (LASAN) will play a crucial role in supporting tree planting, organic waste management, and edible food recovery initiatives. With a focus on climate action, biodiversity, conservation, and environmental justice, Fellows will actively contribute to the city's sustainability efforts while gaining invaluable experience in environmental policy and community engagement within a large municipal government setting. In alignment with SB 1383, Fellows will focus on enhancing operational capacity and streamlining processes for commercial Edible Food Generators (EFGs), aiming to reduce landfill disposal of organic waste - including edible food - and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions like methane. Fellows will foster partnerships, increase program participation, organize community events, conduct outreach, and educate the public about sustainability practices and initiatives, all contributing to LASAN's mission of protecting public health and the environment. Duties include, but are not limited to: Increase participation in the City's organics programs through diverse digital and grassroots marketing strategies and food waste pail distribution initiative. Develop and implement community outreach events to educate, engage, and highlight the positive impacts of City programs such as Organics and Tree Planting. Collaborate with LASAN's graphic design team to develop and distribute educational materials such as flyers, web pages, blogs, videos, and social media posts Deliver presentations to educate the public about core sustainability programs.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Live in California by August 16, 2024. Must be age 18 or older by August 16, 2024. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate.

Preferred qualifications

An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service. Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change. Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities. Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills.
