Project summary

The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is part of a statewide initiative to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. CCAC matches Fellows with organizations to mobilize community members to take direct climate action through education, volunteer mobilization, and assessment focused on urban greening, organic waste diversion and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders.

Opportunity description

John Muir Charter Schools (JMCS) is in its second year of implementing an innovative program in partnership with 3 youth development workforce training agencies: Conservation Corps North Bay (Santa Rosa, CA), Rancho Cielo Youth Campus (Salinas, CA), and Urban Conservation Corps of the Inland Empire (San Bernardino, CA) to increase connections between JMCS partner lead vocational-training programs and the JMCS academic classrooms. Programming focuses on urban greening, wildfire resiliency, and organic waste diversion. Together, Fellows will collaborate to connect JMCS partner agencies - climate action-focused vocational training programs to the JMCS classroom, accompanying students to their vocational training locations and back to the school to incorporate those same climate action focus areas into students' regular daily coursework. Duties include, but are not limited to: Support student education on historical, social, and environmental factors contributing to the climate crisis and current solutions - focusing on urban greening, wildfire resiliency, and organic waste diversion. Develop and present weekly Climate Education events with tools and assignments for students to share information with their communities. Connect vocational training in urban greening, wildfire resilience, and waste diversion with classroom learning by linking daily tasks to climate impact and community-based solutions. Expand and strengthen volunteer engagement with at least 3 annual climate events to unite JMCS communities and partners in climate action initiatives. Cultivate external relationships to enhance JMCS climate impact, academic, and vocational training programs specific to urban greening, wildfire resiliency, and organic waste diversion.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Live in California by August 16, 2024. Must be age 18 or older by August 16, 2024. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate.

Preferred qualifications

An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service. Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change. Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities. Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills.
