Project summary

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are offering a 16-week, full-time, paid Integrated Fire and Recreation Internship. This program focuses on vital fire and recreation work, aiming to provide a top-notch experience for young adults. We encourage diverse applicants, including women and marginalized communities, to apply and join us in addressing complex conservation and social issues.

Opportunity description

Under close supervision, receive on-the-job training in fire suppression and prevention. Assist with fuel management fire suppression such as fire line construction and backfiring. Move dirt, chop brush, or fell small trees to build fire line using hand tools. Patrol fire line to location and extinguish sparks, flare-ups and hot spot fire. Perform other resource management activities as assigned, as well as recreation/trails duties.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens aged 18-30 and have a vehicle for service. A health screening questionnaire is required, and a physical exam will be provided at no cost. For wildland firefighting roles, passing the Work Capacity Test (WCT) at the Arduous level is mandatory. This involves a three-mile hike in 45 minutes while carrying a 45-pound pack.
